3-Year-Olds New to Preschool

If you are enrolling your 3-year-old into preschool for the first time, they may be nervous or excited on their first day. Every child is different in how they react to this new experience. Additionally, as a parent, you may be experiencing your own set of emotions through this process. There are a number of steps you can take to help you and your toddler transition into a new classroom and new routine.

  • Talk you your child before his or her first day. Explain what they are going to be doing and answer any questions they have.
  • Visit the facility multiple times before the first day so you as a parent can become familiar and comfortable with the place you are going to be leaving your child at.
  • Bring your child with you when you visit so with the security of your presence they can also become familiar with the location.
  • Get to know the instructors at the facility.
  • Introduce your child to some of the activities they will be doing in preschool while they are at home.
  • Don’t make too big a deal about this new experience. Children are great at picking up on emotions and if you show your anxiety, the child may also begin to feel anxious.
  • When you do bring your child for their first day, walk them in and stay for at least a few minutes or until you can see they are comfortable and ready to leave.
  • Allow your child to bring a toy with them so they have something of comfort all day.
  • Send snacks you know your child likes.
