Tips for Successful Virtual Learning Boca Raton

Virtual learning is becoming an ever-popular option in the academic world for all grades from pre-k through college. It can be an extremely effective and useful tool in the educational arsenal. However, there are some key differences between traditional and distance learning. In order to make the most of your little one’s virtual school-day, here are some tips from the early childhood education experts at South Florida’s Get Ready Set Grow Academy.

Get in the right headspace

Most mornings in a traditional school environment start with a ritual. Depending on where you are this may be saying the Pledge of Allegiance, singing the school song, or all of the students attending a flag-raising. This kind of activity is a clear signifier that the school day os starting and that our “learning brains” should be turned on. Starting your virtual school days with some kind of ritual has the same effect and can help differentiate between morning family time and learning time.

It is also best to set up a dedicated learning space. Depending on your size constraints, this can be a completely separate room or simply a desk. The important thing is that you are not mixing relaxation spaces (such as a bed or couch) with education spaces. This is confusing for the brain on a subconscious level. Even a student with the best intentions is likely to get distracted if they are trying to study in an area meant for play. By starting with a ritual and having a separate area for learning, you will be giving your students the best foundation to make the most of their virtual education.

Break up the day

In a school, student’s studies are broken up with electives, lunch, and sometimes even just the time it takes to walk from class to class. These mental respites are crucial if we expect our children to be alert throughout a long school day. Mimic these breaks at home with walks, breaks for conversation, and meals away from the computer. These days, we are so used to being in front of technology 24/7. This can make it easy to sit students down and have them complete a day’s work in one fell swoop. This may work for a day or two, but fatigue will quickly set in. A few activities outside of the curriculum may seem like distractions but if time is properly managed, they will actually serve to improve your child’s focus.

Take the opportunity to have fun

One of the best things about distance learning is that you have greater control over how the material is being integrated into your child’s life. If you can, take the time to look over their class’ education plan and find ways to insert applicable lessons into everyday activities. Even simply making connections between the curriculum and what is going on in day-to-day life can go a long way in reinforcing school lessons.

Get Ready Set Grow’s Virtual Learning Boca Raton format has been developed using the knowledge we have gained over the years as South Florida’s #1 choice for daycare and pre-Kindergarten education. We hope that these tips will help the families in our community and beyond make the most of their distance learning program.
